Add options from XP's 'File Types' tab
Add the following:
1. "Confirm open after download (Reg EditFlags value) (Hex: 00 00 01 00)"
2. "Always show/hide extension" (NeverShowExt)
3. "Browse in same window" (BrowserFlags value) settings.176 votes -

Create a non-wizard-based approach
It would be nice to have an "advanced" mode that just shows me everything I can do with an extension instead of using a question/answer format.

How would you feel about a command line version?

Create a package format for setting that can be used by app vendors
Make an xml file format ".defaultprog" that contains a set of changes to the default program settings. For example Paint.Net could provide such a file. When executing the file/package I would get to choose what commands I want to import (edit for png/jpg/bmp/..., open for png/jpg/bmp/...).
That would make it totally easy for Paint.Net users (or users of other apps) to configure their settings.

Add the function to handle context menus for folders
In XP I had a folder context menu item to start Adobe Bridge with the clicked on folder in focus -
I would love to get that functionality back in windows 7 ;-)86 votes -
Add the ability to easily create new file extensions.
It would be nice if I could add file extensions to the list. For example .json
56 votesThere’s no UI for this, but as a temporary workaround you can just create a .json file in WIndows, a double click it. This should add the requisite keys to the registry for DPE to pick it up to edit.

Add support for sub-menu context items
The context menu item would have a sub-menu (cascading) of menu items to choose from. Thus I could group similar actions into a sub-menu instead of having them all in the main context menu.

I’m fully aware of the technical side of things and how to write the correct keys to get this to work, however I am still thinking about a good way to express such functionality in the user interface. Still under consideration.

USB Devices
Currently, Default Programs Editor only supports changing the Autoplay settings for CD and DVD content.
It would be nice if Autoplay handlers would be customizable for USB devices and memory sticks also.25 votesThis is device autoplay, a sticky point (see other requests here).

Make context menu icons vista compatible
When changing the context menu items icon it says that "This feature is only compatible with Windows 7"
However Avast, Adobe Drive, Acrobat and others have.19 votes -

function changing the order of context menu options
Eg:
.bmp file context menu shoudl look like:
Edit
Open in browser
Edit with GIMPBut here is no button to re order the context menu into that order except manually removing and adding options in the order you want them do be.
Arrows moving one selected item up or down in the list would be enough.

I have considered this, and there’s partial functionality inside the program already but not exposed in the UI. The problem with doing this is that not all verbs have the same source, and changing the order willy-nilly can affect more than just the extension/file type you think you’re editing.

Adobe Reader
Some programs like Adobe Reader do things their own way and disable the functions of Default Programs Editor for the according file types.
This is a problem that will for example not allow to change the context menu items for .pdf files.
A workaround is to delete the extension and then set Adobe Reader to always open .pdf files but this will remove the right-click Print option.13 votes -
Add a way to manage context menus for * and AllFileSystemObjects
There is currently only a way to modify context menus for files with extensions. In HKCR, there is a key called * and another called AllFileSystemObjects for which we can't create context menu actions using Default Programs Editor.
13 votesYou can add items to the base class key (*) by choosing ‘All extensions’ when you go to add a new context menu item after selecting ANY extension in the search box.

ImgBurn
Default Programs ManagerEditor can not see .iso files.
Do the following:
1. Create a .iso file.
2. Install ImgBurn.
3. Select the .iso file and see that ImgBurn has made itself the default program. .iso files also show up in Control Panel > Programs > Set a filetype always open with a certain program.
4. Open Default Programs Editor.
5. Navigate File Type Settings > Delete an Extension..iso extension does not show up in Default Programs Editor.

Remove bad icons from Autoplay
When I plug in my iPhone, I always have a the following pop up on my Auto-play section;
Microsoft Office Document Scanning
Microsoft Office WordI would like to remove these options.
This also comes up with other USB devices, but since I reformatted my computer I am unable to give you more examples.
Great program, keep up the good work.

This falls under device autoplay, which I’m still mulling.

Make a way to separate extensions that have been grouped together with same icon, description etc
When I look at my extensions, I see:
CSS File .css, .js
It would be nice if I could separate them so they could have different descriptions, icons, etc6 votesYou can already do this. Icons and Descriptions are per file type in Windows. All of those extensions have the same file type, and therefore, the same icon and description. You need to assign a separate file types to each extension, then change those properties. This can be done on the File Type settings page, by clicking on the “Change an extension’s associated file type” link button.
